Andy Harris League
The ‘Andy Harris’ League began as the brainchild of – Andy Harris. A member of Pilgrim Archers and then Grays Archers, he was a constant figure in Essex being an archer also a Coach and well known by all the archers of his day.
Originally clubs only shot during the summer and all shooting was outside. Andy initiated a league to enable clubs to meet and shoot indoors during the winter months. The format of the round was fifteen yards as it was the longest distance most halls could accommodate and was the only winter league in the County. Andy named it ‘The Essex League’. Started in 1965 it was run by him until his death in 1991.
After that I continued his work and, in his honour, renamed it ‘The Andy Harris League’. I can recall forty-nine teams in the league but with the availability of larger halls and the introduction of longer distance indoor rounds, more Indoor leagues were formed and some dropped the 15-yard competition.
The Andy Harris League is still run as it was originally intended. It does not officially come under the jurisdiction of the County and its purpose is to allow clubs to meet during the winter months for a friendly get-together with a bit of minor inter-club rivalry.
I personally hope that the format of this league will never change, as it would then no longer be as Andy intended and the spirit in which he founded it would be lost.
