Essex vs Cambridge Match – 11th September 2022

MATCH REPORT CAMBRIDGE VS ESSEX SEPT 11th

As this was my first match as Team Manager, it was a great day to be part of the Essex County Team in our match against Cambridge. An early start ,as we left home at 7.00am with a 90 minute drive ahead of us and greeted with fog for about 90% of the journey to Jolly Archers club in Huntingdon.

On arrival, I was greeted by John Gorman, who had organised everything for us, so my job was made much easier.

The Essex team was made up with the following archers.
Wilko van Kleef Bolton, Mark Turner, Tony Gedalovitch , Dermot Burns( debut) , Harry Cossey, Bob Attalia, Tony Mayer, Eric Mallet , Jason Pretlove, Brian Lock, Andrew Lock, Allan Horne, Zep Birdsall , Chris Higgins and Wendie King.

The rounds we were shooting were York/ Hereford/ Bristol (juniors)and Essex had entered teams for Barebow/ Longbow/Recurve & Compound, unfortunately no juniors.

The weather was dry and overcast to start but the sun did start to break through mid-morning with a slight breeze which helped as it was quite warm at times.

There was lots of banter amongst the archers which went on all day. This included how we had managed to get 3 Tonys on the Essex team, a big coincidence!?? So it was decided to make things easier. It would be Tony G, Big T, and Tony!!!

As with any Archery competition, some archers shot better than expected and others not what they had hoped for.

The result of the match was as follows.
CAMBRIDGE JUNIORS 2PTS ESSEX 0PTS
CAMBRIDGE BAREBOW 0PTS ESSEX 2PTS
CAMBRIDGE COMPOUND 2PTS ESSEX 0PTS
CAMBRIDGE LONGBOW 0PTS ESSEX 2PTS
CAMBRIDGE RECURVE 0PTS ESSEX 2PTS

Overall score Cambridge 4pts - Essex 6pts

A special mention for 3 Essex Archers who claimed Rose Awards , Wilko, Harry and Dermot (who was only a handful of points off Master Bowman score after only starting Archery a few months ago,) so well done to you all..

Also a big Thank you to Jolly Archers for hosting the shoot, Philip Watson / John Gorman for making my life very easy and to Jack, the Cambridge Team Manager for his guidance too.

Let’s hope we can have a return match next year, in Essex as Cambridge are very keen for a re-match .

Tony King( Assistant Team Manager)
