George Benson

It is with great sadness that I must pass on news that our fellow Rayleigh Town Archery Club member, once-chairman and good friend George Benson has passed away after a long illness.

George was an extremely talented archer in a variety of disciplines over many decades of shooting. A glance at the trophies in the clubhouse gives evidence to his success - his name appears in series on most of them.
He is listed as holder of many club records, and remains holder of the County record for the Windsor round.

He was part of the legendary RTAC Albion recurve team from the mid-nineties which still holds the league score record - and characteristically George was the highest-scoring member of the team.
In his later years he switched to shooting compound and was a companion to many at Runwell, shooting there with the Wednesday afternoon regulars.

George was a quiet constant at the club: always ready with encouragement and wise advice, some strong opinions and a quick wit. He will be greatly missed by anyone who knew him, but his presence will be permanent at Rayleigh Town Archery Club through his many accomplishments, dedication to the club and to the sport.

George's funeral will take place at Chelmsford Crematorium but no date has yet been announced. We will send details when received.
