10th March 2012
For a hastily arranged junior indoor inter-county match the Essex squad made their way to St.Aubyns School at Rottindean to take on Sussex with recurve and compound bows on Saturday 10th March 2012. The Essex team comprised of four new débutante county archers as well as established team members and having arrived on time were forced to wait outside while to organisers finished the preceding round. It was good to see how they all managed to gel into a team while they were waiting, a good sign for things to come. Once in the gym – too small to allow parents inside- the team settled down rapidly to some serious archery in a 18m FITA round.
The compound match swung between the two counties, at the end of each dozen there were only a few points between them and the lead kept changing – all keeping me on tenterhooks but ignored by the archers. The Sussex compound team had one absent archer so the Team Managers agreed to take the best three scores in this discipline for the match. However the Essex recurve team pulled steadily ahead of Sussex with each dozen and achieved a substantial winning margin at the end.
The eventual outcome was a win for Essex in both disciplines, Essex recurve by 187 points ( Essex 1744, Sussex 1557) ; Essex compound by 9 points (Essex 1686, Sussex 1677).
Congratulations to all who took part in the match, particularly the debutee's who impressed me with the speed that they settled down in. Congratulations to Daisy Clarke who beat her own National record for this round by 3 points.
My thanks go to all the juniors for their sterling efforts on the day, to the parents who supported them and to Alex Body who stepped in at the very last minute to replace Luke Baharie who had broken his nose and concussed himself playing rugby.
I hope that this becomes a regular event as inter-county junior matches do not happen often.
Recurve; Kayleigh Griffin* 354, Alex Body 474, Alex Cordaro* 458, George Johnson* 458
Compound; Sophie Brown 536, Daisy Clarke 583, David Fall* 542, Luke Wiseman 561
(* - denotes first county appearance)
The Essex winning team – well done everyone.
