West Essex Bowmen - Big Weekend a Phenomenal Success!

Joining in the national celebration of sport in conjunction with Archery GB’s ‘Big Weekend’, West Essex Bowmen held an incredibly successful come and try day on Saturday 25th September.

PR officer Neill Boatman told us, ‘ the aim for us, was from many angles, 1) To take part in the national campaign, 2) Raise awareness in our local community and 3) to create a fun day for the whole family to enjoy.

What we didn’t anticipate was the phenomenal success the day would be and the additional benefits it would bring.

As a team we knew it would be vital to get the whole club involved from the outset and not have the usual suspects doing all the work for everyone’s gain.

With myself overseeing the whole event our club social secretary’s  (Helen and Joy) volunteered to organise, non archery events/activities and catering with the Coaching staff taking responsibility for the come and try element of the day.

The result was day that will be remembered for a long time and has set us on our way to holding this as an annual event.

Club members rallied to support the promotion of the day with producing and distributing hundreds of flyers to the local community, banners were provided by local businesses and the local press published details in papers and web based news channels.

With activities such as Wack a Rat, Hook the Duck, Tombola, Darts, Book stalls and as always hot dogs and refreshments there was plenty to do besides the archery.

This proved to be the winning element of making this a truly great day as we were able to manage the unbelievable numbers that turned up to shoot by way of a non-queuing system.

Once registered the public were free to roam and take part in the days activities and then be called by loud hailer at there time to shoot.

We had in excess of 126 non-archers shot through out the day and many shooting more than once, with families staying for the day to take in the atmosphere.

As a result our September beginners course is full with an additional one planned for October and many more names on the books to the extent that we could hold a course every month for several months if we wanted to.

An amazing day full of fun that we cant wait to build on in 2013
