Oakfield Archers York Round - 2010

“WE FEW, WE HAPPY FEW, WE BAND OF BROTHERS…” THE ST CRISPIN DAY ADDRESS AT AGINCOURT WAS AGAIN THE INTRODUCTION TO OUR SHOOT.  ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS WERE THE MILITARY REASONS FOR CHOOSING THE WARBOW AND THE SURNAMES OF THOSE PRESENT RECORDED AS ARCHERS IN THE MUSTER ROLLS ON “THE SOLDIER IN LATER MEDIEVAL ENGLAND”  WEBSITE.  SIX STALWARTS ATTENDED.  THE FORECAST WAS FOR UP TO AN INCH OF RAIN, BUT  THE SHOWERS PETERED OUT BY LUNCHTIME AND THREAFTER BECAME QUITE HOT.  THERE WAS A SLIGHT CROSS WIND.   THE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN AT THE FIRST GLIMPS OF SUN AT THE END OF THE FIRST SIX DOZEN ARROWS. 

 AGAIN THE FUN YORK ROUND AT “OAKFIELD ARCHERS” WAS SHOT AT THEIR GROUND ON FAIRLOP PLAIN ON 8TH JUNE.   WE SIX LONGBOW ARCHERS,  SHOT A ROUND OF 6 DOZ ARROWS AT 100YDS, 4 DOZ AT 80 YDS AND 2 DOZ AT 60 YDS.  THE WINDING OF THE HORN SIGNALLED THE START AND AN ARROW STORM WAS ATTEMPTED WITH THE FIRST ARROWS SHOT TO THE MEDIEVAL COMMAND OF  “MARK : DRAW : LOOSE.”

TOM SCORED TWO AND  CHARLIE SCORED ONE GOLD AT 100 YDS.  CHARLIE ALSO TWICE HAD FOUR SCORING HITS AT 100 YARDS.  WE ALL MANAGED SOME HITS AT 100 YARDS. 

LUNCH IN THE OPEN AT NOON FOLLOWED  THE FIRST SIX DOZEN ARROWS.  THE REFRESHMENT INCLUDED SOME TOTS OF SNAPS ( AKVAVIT) TO THE TOAST OF “SKAL” AS AN APERITIF FOLLOWED BY A POST PRANDIAL “SAMBUCA” TO THE ENGLISH TOAST OF “WAES HAEL”.  (ANGLO SAXON FOR YOUR GOOD HEALTH.)   THESE WERE APPRECIATED..   NO ARROWS WERE LOST AND AGAIN,  DESPITE THE EARLY RAIN, WE  FINISHED THE ROUND BY EARLY AFTERNOON.

MAX ROOM, PICTURED ABOVE WITH STEVE WAS DECLARED THE CHAMPION OF THE DAY.  WITH DUE CEREMONY  MAX WAS AGAIN PRESENTED WITH A GOBLET TOGETHER WITH AN INSCRIBED  TROPHY AND A COMMEMORATIVE SCROLL.

THE “FUN” YORK ROUND ONCE AGAIN HAD SUCCEEDED IN  LIVING UP TO ITS NAME IN BEING GREAT FUN IN THIS ITS FOURTH  YEAR : DESPITE THE RAIN. NEXT YEAR IS PLANNED TO BE AN EVEN GREATER SUCCESS.
