I believe the inaugural Intercounty longbow Portsmouth match between Essex and Cambridgeshire took place at the Deanes School on Sunday 26th April 2009. This fixture was arranged following discussion about how few Intercounty matches were available for the longbow fraternity. As such it took place very late in the indoor season , but enough archers were available to make it an event. As someone said –“it was a lovely day to be shooting outdoors”
Each county fielded 11 archers, with the final score to be the best seven scores to include one Gentlemen, one Lady and one Junior.
At the end of a very fast paced match – longbow archers do not hang about – The final scores were Essex – 2886, Cambridgeshire -2653. Essex won by 233 points.
Everyone agreed that it was worth doing again, but felt that the journey time was disproportionate to the shooting time. It was agreed that next year when Cambridgeshire host, it will become a double Portsmouth, and that it would be scheduled earlier than April.
Ladies – Pat Spragg – 398, Lynette Fisher – 258
Gentlemen – Paul Whiteman – 472, Terry Riddick – 435, Tony Maher – 422, Kevin Bailey – 419, Bob Riley – 398, Charlie Barnes – 380, Steve Spragg – 264
Juniors – George Whitley – 337, Laurie Clarke – 262
My thanks go to all the archers involved, Rayleigh Town AC for the venue and catering, and Alan Harding for being Judge. Bring on 2010!
