National Indoor Championships - Lilleshall - 16th & 17th Feb 2008

What a glorious weekend it was. Too good for an indoor event. We should have been on a field course. However, The organisers managed to stage an excellent event again at Wenlock Hall. They didn't know what a nice weekend it was going to be. There was some magnificent shooting and the head to heads rounds always spring some surprises and nail biting finishes.

I couldn't make the Saturday Recurve tournament, but the results spoke for themselves. Well done to Wendie Stevens who managed 16th in the seeding rounds, beat the 17th seed 107 to 103 only to meet Naomi Folkard (GB) in the 1/8 eliminator round. Despite stepping up the pace, Wendie lost to Naomi 116 to 110. Good shooting Wendie, but getting placed midfield and winning means you get drawn against a top seed.

Surprise of the day, but not to those who know him, 16 year old Tom Barber from Thorpe Hamlet was seeded number one and went on to win the day beating several GB seniors.

Sunday was Compound and Longbow day and offered no less competition. George Fenton was in the first round scoring a PB. Well done George, that's what we all aim for. Philip Glover turned up for the second round and made 15th seed and fell prey to the same trap as Wendie. Philip was drawn against Clophill's Terry Course in the 1/16 eliminators and managed to win 116 to 115 only to meet number 2 seed Liam Grimwood (GB) in the 1/8 round. Try as you may, it's very hard to beat someone who only drops one point and Philip's 115 made no impression on Liam's 119.

Final placing were:
Ladies Recurve    1st Naomi Folkard     2nd Allison Williamson    3rd Jenny Jeppson    4th Emma Downie

Gents Recurve    1st Tom Barber    2nd    James Laing    3rd Michael Peart    4th Peter Clayton

Ladies Compound    1st Wendy Rowell    2nd    Nicky Hunt    3rd Andrea Gales    4th Lucy O'Sullivan

Gents Compound    1st James Forbes    2nd Adam Shaw    3rd Liam Grimwood    4th Neil Bowley

The good news is that Southern Counties won the Regional Compound trophy.
The team comprised Nicola Simpson, Neil Wakelin, Matt Gardner and Philip Glover.

Andrea Gales obviously enjoys the shoot offs. Having lost a one arrow shoot off to the third arrow in the semi finals decided that it was enough and took it to the 4th arrow to win 3rd place. It's the head to heads and this sort of competition that makes for good spectator sport. Perhaps I didn't mind missing the field round after all.
