Junior FITA Star & Junior National Championships 2008

Having lost son Michael from the world of archery to the world of girls, I jumped at the suggestion from Steve Fenton of renting a few of our juniors archers, sticking them on a mini bus and ferrying them up to Lilleshall for the Junior National Championships. Steve was similarly pining for the Junior Championships after George became a senior last November and we figured the only way we could get there would be to press gang a few of our kids from the club.

Having realised I had cocked up my work diary which put me in Sandown Park for all of the Friday, it was left to David Scorah to hire a bus and drive our kids and their parents to Lilleshall (Steve also came up with an excellent excuse not to travel in the mini bus).

We took five junior archers from Mayflower,  four of whom had never shot at this level of tournament before. They were joined by archers from RTAC, Oakfield, Chelmsford Tudor Rose, HNA, Burntwood, Noak Hill, Priory Bowmen and CADAC. This was an impressive turnout for Essex Juniors and a long way from the poor showing in 2002 when we had just two!

Saturday saw the best of the weather for the Junior FITA Star and some great results from Essexjuniors. Those who lay in the medal positions were:

Sunday saw the all important Bristol rounds and the National Championships. Steve and I have been making these trips for the best part of the last six years and they have always been incredibly stressful as our two youngsters progressed each year, at times turning in to the devil incarnate. This was therefore meant to be a relaxing and (for once) stress free weekend, but some little sod from Noak Hill Archers ruined all that on the Sunday! – we were both nervous wrecks by lunch time as one Luke Willett went in to lunch some 28 points ahead of GB archers such as Tom Barber, Sean Evans, Eddie Spouge and James Mortlock.

The weather for the weekend was mostly sunshine and showers, but the intensity of the rain on Sunday at times could of resembled a scene from Noah’s Flood. In spite of the deluge, Luke seemed to thrive in the conditions and go from strength to strength. Going in to the last two dozen distance was nerve racking and poor dad Keith looked like he just wanted to run and hide! As the last arrows were shot it became clear that Luke had won and with a comfortable margin of some 26 points. An incredible result for a lad who has shown quite remarkable progress over the last year.

Well done to all Essex Juniors who took part in this years National Championships. Final results for all of our archers (I hope I found them all this year!) were:

PS: Dowwww! missed one. My apologies to Jodie Barnes of Priory Bowmen whom I missed when I first published this article. Perhaps I'll get them all next year! Well done to Jodie, who achieved a great placing on Sunday of 4th.
