On Sunday 30th March 2008, the Essex senior recurve team made their way to the Meadhurst Sports Centre in Sunbury-on-Thames, for the annual 4-Counties match. It was a lovely day, the sun shone and there was little wind, just the conditions needed for an indoor shoot, plus we had all put the clocks forward one hour the previous night. The Meadhurst Centre sports hall was unusual in that the access doors were halfway down the range, so we were all locked in once shooting began and anyone needing to take a comfort break during scoring had to leave their quiver by the exit door to prevent being locked out.
While we were waiting for the briefing/sighters, a casual question to Pat Spragg on how she did at the SCAS indoors on Saturday, elicited the answer that she had won the ladies compound event, Laurie Clarke was also mentioned as winning the junior boys longbow event.
Just prior to the start the Middlesex team captain inquired if the other three team captains would permit a slight change to allow the top five scores to count as one of their team had not arrived. Everyone agreed to this, and the competition started. It proceeded without incident, apart from a “Robin Hood” from Yvonne Wade on another competitor’s arrow that had the temerity to occupy the + in the centre of their target.
Once finished, the teams were given a sumptuous buffet while the results were checked and compiled by independent group organised by the hosts Middlesex. The results were;
1st - Essex - total 2868 points
2nd – Middlesex – total 2845 points
3rd – Kent – total 2807 points
4th – London – total 2755 points
